We, meaning parents and educators, are all partners in helping our children become more literate. Literacy is crucial in being successful as a student and later in the work place. Skills in literacy need to be developed in early childhood and then honed through research-based teaching strategies. When children have difficulties that prevent them from making normal progress in their development, early intervention strategies can put them back on track or give them the tools they will need to compensate. Literacy has been broadly defined as being able to read and write. Research has shown that there are many skills that are necessary for this to occur. In the recent history of education, these facets of literacy were often segregated out as separate subjects. Now we are finding that by developing these skills as a unit (although still recognizing the discrete skills as being important), students are becoming more fluent and proficient in all aspects of reading and writing.
