Picturing

Enjoy these stories that second graders created using the "Picturing Writing" process. The stories were part of their "Animal" and "Winter" curriculum themes. Following direct teaching and modeling of story elements (beginning, middle, end, setting, characters, problem, solution) students created their paintings, verbally rehearsed their stories, brainstormed descriptive words and wrote. Peer and teacher conferencing were an important part of this process.

Credits: "Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art" is an art- and literature-based writing approach developed by Beth Olshansky. Its progression of mini-lessons teach key literary elements of writing: sense of setting, sequencing, beginning, middle, end, plot development, character development, use of descriptive language and voice.
