The following are tips that I suggest you do along with reading to add books to the I Love Books Club list.
Fill your house with reading materials: books, magazines, newspaper. Let your child see you reading.
Put magnetic letters on the refrigerator so your child can explore and learn the letters, their names and the sounds they make.
In the grocery store talk about letter: in their favorite cereal or cracker (find a cereal that begins with the /k/ sound)
When riding in the car or walking down the street, look for words and letters you recognize: STOP, GO, MacDONALDS, SHAWS.
Let your child go on a letter or word. Search in old magazines or newspapers. Search for the letter of the week, letters in their name, words from the sight word list.
Talk about letters in family and friends names. What does Mary's name start with? What sound does the P make in Pat's name?
ENJOY THIS TIME- Learning to read should be a natural part of growing up. Read, read, read...visit the library, watch Book Talk on Channel 22, swap books with friends, go to the Exeter Public Library story hour, and buy some quality books through our Scholastic Book Order. Together we'll build a love of books and help your child discover the joy in reading!
