Band Questions Answered

Sometimes questions arise about policy as it pertains to our instrumental music program. Hopefully this will address any questions you may have about the band program here at Lincoln Street School.

How often/much should my child practice? I ask that the students practice about 15 minutes per day. At the beginning level, that’s about all they can physically take (if they have a blowing instrument). Later on, they may wish to play longer. Practice is considered their homework. They cannot learn if they only play in class.

How do I know my child is progressing in his/her lessons?

Instrumental progress reports are sent home with each report card. If a situation warrants a call home prior to this, I will call to discuss your child with you. Students are not judged on how well they play, but whether or not they attend class, have everything they need, and whether they are doing the correct things to sound good and play well.

If my child does not have her instrument, should she attend her lesson? Yes, please!!! If the student is present in class, she can learn even if she doesn’t have her instrument. It is more difficult for her to catch up if she’s not there.

If my child forgets his instrument at home, may he call to have it brought in? No, sorry. This disrupts their class, and there is nowhere to store the instruments at the office when they arrive.

My child has decided to drop the program. What do I do?

Should your child decide to drop (and many do), I ask that you send in a note, with the instrument. I will return the instrument to Coffey Music. I do require the note, as sometimes I have students who wish to drop, but their parents are not aware.
